Gas heaters are affordable for fast-heating right across Australia. But, it’s important to keep in mind the potential dangers of running gas heaters in enclosed environments.
When was the last time you organised to have your gas heaters properly serviced?
Most authorities across Australia recommend that heaters are serviced by a properly qualified gas fitter at least every two years (especially before the winter heating season), although the health department of the WA government recommends servicing every year.
At the same time a NSW Health Department fact sheet about un-flued gas heaters says:
Check that the room you are heating has air vents and that these are not blocked. If you do not have air vents you should keep a door or a window open to allow the movement of air in and out of the room.
A faulty gas heater can cause serious health problems that seem to be worse, or only occur when the heating is on, may be caused by carbon monoxide from a faulty gas heater.
Here are some symptoms:
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Increased asthma
- Dizziness
While it is important to have your gas heater serviced by a certified professional at least every two years, here are some tell-tale signs of damage:
- Pilot light goes out
- Heater walls become too hot to touch
- Signs of heat damage
- Soot stains around the heater
- Heater has a yellow or sooty flame
