Mother’s Day is right around the corner for 2018, and it’s time to start thinking about how to show mum you appreciate her. In the meantime, here are five facts you didn’t know about Mother’s Day.
The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908
The first Mother’s Day was held way back in 1908 when a US woman named Anna Jarvis honoured her late mother and all mothers with a memorial. However, Jarvis was disappointed by how commercialised the day had become by the 1920s, by which time it was adapted into other countries like Australia.
An insane number of flowers are purchased on Mother’s Day
Of all the flowers purchased for holidays, one quarter are bought on Mother’s Day alone. Sounds like a great time to be a florist! You’ll be doing more than just making mum’s day by giving her roses: research shows there are health benefits to receiving flowers.
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day were almost combined
In the 1920s and 30s, there were proposals that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day should be combined into one holiday – Parent’s Day. Of course, the idea was knocked back and we celebrate our parents on separate days.
Australians spend more on mum than dad
Fathers, look away now! Australians spend a whopping $1.36 billion every Mother’s Day, while forking out $660 million on Father’s Day. I guess mum really is the word!
Mother’s Day is the third-most popular holiday in the world
Behind Christmas and Easter, Mother’s Day is the most widely celebrated holiday in the world. Who knew?
