Plumbing issues happen all throughout the year, but there are certain issues that occur more commonly over the summer months.
There are generally a lot of people at home during the months of December to February placing more pressure on household utilities. Your toilet, shower and washing machine will more than likely be working overtime!
To help make sure you can enjoy the Christmas holiday period without too many issues, we have compiled a list of the most common plumbing problems people face over the summer months and tips on how you can prevent them from ruining your time off.
Clogged Toilets
Your toilet is bound to be working overtime in summer, especially if you have kids at home on school holidays. The first thing you need to make sure of is that everyone in the house knows not to flush anything down the toilet other than human waste and toilet paper. It is also a good idea to not overuse your toilet paper. Also, cleaning your toilet regularly can help ensure nothing is getting built up over time. However, if you do notice your toilet is leaking or has started develop a weak flush get a professional to come and look at it ASAP.
Washing machine stress
It is inevitable with more people at home that your washing machine will be on high rotation over the Christmas and New Year period. If possible make sure that someone stays at home while the washing machine is being used, this is just in case anything unusual occurs so you will be there to attend to it straight away. Also, to ensure that the hose on your washing machine doesn’t kink, it’s a good idea to move your washing machine away from the wall a little.
Sewer line damage
Stormwater and overgrown tree roots are both common issues that can block sewer lines during summer. Tree roots grow faster and further with the warmer weather and commonly cause sewer lines to crack. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot that you can do to prevent these two natural causes. The best advice we can give, is to make sure you keep an eye out for any drainage problems such as your sink water draining unusually slowly, this generally means there is an issue with your sewer line. If you notice anything unusual make sure you contact us.
Drain & Gutter blockages
It’s a job that we all put off for as long as possible, but it is so important to do when it comes to preparing your house for summer. There are bound to be storms that occur over the summer months, especially with the crazy weather Australia has been experiencing lately. If your gutters and drains are not clear you are more than likely going to get blockages, which in turn could lead to flooding. The best preventative measure is to take the time to clear out your drains and gutters regularly.
