5 tips to prep your plumbing for Christmas

For all of us Christmas means a whole lot more of everything – food and liquid consumption, kitchen waste, major water usage and visitors galore – all putting considerable pressure on your household pipes.

You may be stressed but spare a thought for your poor plumbing!

For plumbers the days following Christmas are sometimes the busiest time of the year.

There are a number of things that you can do to make sure that your house’s plumbing is in top shape in the lead up to Christmas by following these five tips:

1/ Watch out for potential blockage signs… and smells.

A major contributor to toilet clogs is increased usage. So if your toilet or sinks are already draining slowly, making gurgling noises or smelling bad, it’s time to call a plumber now before you face an overflowing toilet.
One of the most common causes of blocked and crushed sewer pipes is tree roots. If you have any big trees near these pipes, it might be time for us to come around for a ‘healthy pipe inspection’.

2/ Prepare the bathrooms for extra use.

If you have more than one toilet or bathroom, make sure they are all clean and available to use. It’s best for the pipes if the love is spread around.
Have a bin prominently placed next to your toilet for visitors to use. Sanitary items, baby wipes, paper towels and make-up remover pads don’t dissolve and can block pipes. Oh and using those ‘flushable’ toilet wipes will definitely put you on the environmentally friendly naughty list!

3/ Don’t cut corners in the kitchen.

Busy kitchens mean a lot more waste and it can be tempting to save time by putting scraps down sinks or disposers. Oil and grease or stringy, fibrous waste such as turkey skins, potato/banana skins or fruit pits should not go in the waste disposer. Ditto for coffee grounds and egg/nut shells.
Pipes can become easily clogged with cooking oil and grease. Use paper towels or newspaper to soak up oil or wipe out pots and pans, and then throw it in the bin.

4/ Fill up the gas bottles.

Make sure you have full gas bottles at least a couple of days before Christmas Day lunch. Even better, connect your BBQ to your home’s gas system and you never have to worry again about running out of gas mid-cooking. 5/ Is your hot water system up to the task?

With extra visitors in the house, running out of hot water doesn’t have to be inevitable. It may be time to replace an ageing hot water system now rather than later. Check out our guide to helping you choose the right hot water system for your needs.
Ask your guests and family to stagger their showers over both the morning and night so there isn’t as much pressure on the hot water.
You could also get into the habit of running the dishwasher at night or pre-programing your washing machine for early morning washes so they are not interfering with showers.

Even though your bathroom may be a small space, there are some clever tips and tricks you can use that will make you forget your bathroom’s size.

Modern furniture & floating vanities

There’s no reason why your bathroom sink and toilet should be old-fashioned and out-of-style. Treat your bathroom, your household, and your guests by updating the old to the new. A floating vanity saves space and this is something you should explore.

Big mirrors

It’s no surprise that mirrors are a walkway to other dimensions. Adding a few large mirrors to your bathroom will show different dimensions of your bathroom and it will look bigger than it actually is.

De-clutter with cupboards

A smaller bathroom can look cluttered with just a few things lying around. Having a modern cupboard in your small bathroom will mean you can de-clutter the environment.

Corner sink

Because of the small bathroom size, it’s good to install a nice corner-sink in your bathroom so you can swiftly move around the room without bumping into things. A bonus tip is to install this corner sink directly across from the toilet.

Small shower

If you are going to install a shower in your small bathroom, make sure it is only big enough for one person. This will save you space in the bathroom. Also be sure to avoid installing shower doors that open out in your small bathroom. An old fashioned shower curtain may solve this issue.

Sliding doors

Have you ever walked into a bathroom and you have to uncomfortably squeeze in while you close the door? This can easily be avoided with a simple slide-entry door.

Colour

Your small bathroom should have one colour as a theme. Having one colour not only looks stylish it also makes your space look larger than it is.

Built-ins

One of the best things you can do in your small bathroom is creating built-in cupboards like you can see in the image above. This will save so much space in your small bathroom. Bonus points if you do the same with your shower!

The team at Curran Plumbing spend plenty of time working with our clients when they are installing their new bathrooms.

Along with getting the bathroom plumbing right designing and planning a new bathroom takes time and effort and sometimes it’s hard to decide between style and utility.

We’ve put together 10 bathroom trends that might provide you with the inspiration you need.

1// Follow a theme

Why not choose a theme for your bathroom. It might be a little confusing for you and guests if you have a collection of different themes in one space. An example of a theme is the luxury-vintage theme in the picture above. Everything is themed from the claw foot bath to the taps and other fixtures.

2// Plants

You don’t need to restrict keeping plants in the living room, kitchen and outside. You can keep plants in the bathroom and a plant can add a lot of life to the room if you place it strategically. Just make sure that you have enough light in your bathroom for the plant and make sure that the styling and colour of the pot fits in with other bathroom fixtures.

3// Open showers

Open showers are right on trend. A square shower-head coming from the middle of the roof is just like standing under a waterfall. There are a wide variety of open showers on the market but keep in mind the amount of space that you have to play with when you are planning a bathroom with an open shower.

4// Mosaic

These patterns are interesting to look at, especially in the bathroom. If you are having a messy day, your guests will be too wrapped up in these patterns to notice the mess.

5// Wood

While many people choose tiled walls for the bathroom it’s interesting to see that some are now choosing wood. Wooden features in a bathroom really add character and provide some variety that you don’t see every day.

6// Colours

Your bathroom can always use some colour! It is your choice which you would like to use, but make sure you find items in the bathroom to match the colour you choose.

7// Modern sink

The best thing about this day and age is how beautiful a sink can now look! Have you ever looked at the different types of sinks? Maybe you can get a little creative and customise your own sink and other items.

8// Large tiles

A great thing that is now appearing in bathrooms all around the world is over-sized tiles. They look great!

9// Built-in shower cupboard

Gone are the days where you hang a stainless-steel rack off your showerhead to hold all your soap and shampoo. Creating an in-built shower cupboard will make your life easier and it will make your shower look more attractive.

10// Lighting

If you can, experiment with lighting! Perhaps you can install a light-dimmer if you haven’t already done so? Create the perfect mood for your bathroom, especially if you have a long deep bath to relax in at the end of the day.
